I’M With Bitchface – The Serious Comedy Site.
I’m With Bitchface is a very good stand-up comedy CD though the title, taken from one of the bits, really does not reflect its tone. Shannon Thompson has a non-aggressive style that works very well for him and his material. The comic does not always bring anything new to the topics table but he knows how to give it a new twist or two such as in the airplane bit that opens this CD. There are a couple of routines on I’m With Bitchface that clearly indicate Thompson really could push himself a little harder.
One such routine is Historical Role Playing where the comic and his girlfriend get a little historically inspired in bed: “She was Kennedy, I was Oswald. … She asked me to bring in a second shooter.” It is unfortunate Shannon Thompson seems to cut that bit short because the audience is clearly not au courant enough to follow along.
Also very good on I’m With Bitchface are Bird Killer which makes you squirm and laugh at the same time, UFC Style Sex. Some of his more adult material in Hook Hands and Pottery Barn Romance is on the unusual side.
Shannon Thompson I’m With Bitchface is a very entertaining comedy CD but I am somewhat looking more towards the next one.
White People Can Do Whatever They Want – The Serious Comedy Site
White People Can Do Anything is an enjoyable first stand-up comedy mp3 album by John Conroy. Conroy is certainly a comic to keep track of. Though the album starts off weak with a bathroom reference, something the comic even acknowledges, the rest features good adult audience routines.
Conroy is a big guy so there are a few fat bits on this mp3 comedy album. These are quite original, especially the joke about “chubby chaser” being an oxymoron.
The album features the usual young comic topics like dead-end jobs, drinking, being broke, and so on. Conroy’s take on these is original enough to keep you interested. Conroy’s political material is rather weak. He is much better at audience interaction.
One of the highlights of White People Can Do Anything is when Conroy redoes one of his bits from a woman’s point of view.
One somewhat annoying thing about Conroy as a comic is his material is disorganized. Case in point is the bit about his father where the punchline comes as an afterthought much after the set up of him watering a plastic plant.
This release is clearly a first. This is not a strike against it, just something a buyer needs to know.
Sound quality being a hobby horse, I found the balance between the comic and the audience to be rather off so the audience feels like it is in another room.
Disappointed In You – The Serious Comedy Site
I have no idea why someone would be disappointed in Tommy Thompson. Disappointed In You leaves no doubt he is an excellent comic. Perhaps he is a little more appropriate for an adult audience in its thirties but anyone who appreciates good comedy will enjoy this stand-up comedy MP3 album or CD. One thing I really appreciate about Thompson is he knows economy is an important part of good stand-up. MP3 album at Amazon
Thompson is a biographical and observational comic. The CD opens with an interesting story about a crunchy granola chick with no TV. The first track also includes an observation about one of the songs in Grease that will make you question that musical from now on.
His segues are quite smooth. In particular, the one from the homeless couple to a friend getting married.
There are a couple of instances where I wished he had delved further. One is about being the only one of three children that was not baptized and his parents now changing their mind. Another is about both he and his brother being stand-up comics.
Thompson also covers more controversial material. His abortion bit is dark and funny. The masturbation material is a bit too juvenile for me but you can’t please everybody and I am being a bit picky.
This is good stuff.
